RBVL WEEK 7

Devin Gavigan

The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League had a sunny seventh week of games this past Wednesday evening. A relief from the last few weeks poor weather conditions, the players were more than willing to trade in last weeks long sleeves for tank tops and sunglasses. The sun beamed down on the sand, while the soft winds kept the players cool and comfortable during their matches. Children were running around and playing in the sand, cheering on their parents as the adult supporters took advantage of the sunshine by soaking up the rays while their friends and family competed in the league.

The teammates were in high spirits and energy throughout the evening, many competing in close and intense sets. On Court 19, The Mighty Crom and FAM’s Breakaway had a magnetic game. Both teams fought for a win with long volleys filled with hard digs, difficult saves, strong blocks, powerful jump serves and hits. FAMs Breakaways read the ball well and rarely let it touch the floor, even against The Mighty Crom’s jump serves and fast hits. The sets were full of competitive plays and each point was earned through much hard work. In the Moon Division, Riis Park Beach Bazaar showed great vigor; their players played through injuries and had several consecutive serving strikes against The Billy Macs.

The sand was being kicked up across the Riis Park Beach as the games continued, eventually coming to a close. Players, referees, supporters, and children went through the weekly routine and packed up their chairs and coolers and headed towards home. Some headed to RBQ to celebrate and continue the socializing. The beautiful weather in the day weaved into the evening, making for a positive week 7.  The atmosphere was filled with excited people ready to spend their Wednesday together with friends, family, and volleyball. It’s going to be hard to beat this weeks weather and energy, but I’m sure week 8 will not disappoint.
