Windy Week 10 By Devin Gavigan RBVL had to face the wicked wind
this past Wednesday, August 1st.
Though the players did luck out with no rain during the evening, high winds
added its own challenge. From setting up the nets to passing the ball,
everything was giving people more trouble than usual. On the plus side, week 10
skies were blue and partly cloudy and kept the volleyball players dry. The high level winds left the games off to a rough start.
People tried to pepper and warm-up before their matches to get used to the
weather. It seemed like almost every match began with a lot of experimenting
with each other and the effects of the uncontrollable ball movement. Diving and
deep digs were a common theme throughout the games. Wise Clock Café and Bungalow
Bar & Restaurant over on Court 17 adjusted fast to the weather. Through a lot of
communication, the teams did not allow the wind to be a large factor in the
outcome of the sets. The Bungalow Bar & Restaurant made a lot of diving saves
and Wise Clock Café used the wind to their advantage when serving. Court 1’s
Atlantic Service Sandsharks also pushed through the conditions best they could,
pushing the ball forward when hitting was not available. Teams from many of the
courts worked hard as they tried to push their teams higher up the standings
into the upcoming week 11.
If you didn’t have sunglasses on you likely had a problem
with the sand. Sand was constantly in the air, making it very hard to keep your
awareness up. A lot of children, however, enjoyed the windy and sunny weather,
playing tag and blowing bubbles into the air. As the games came to a close and
players packed up their chairs, people headed to the Bungalow Bar for an after
party. For more updates on the RBVL, look on the website rbvl.com.
